A wave of arbitrary blocks initiated by Meta, which has paralyzed thousands of WhatsApp accounts in Israel in recent weeks, has acutely spread to the Instagram application. Many users report facing warning screens notifying them of account suspension due to vague claims of violating community guidelines. Reports on the Downdetector site and social networks indicate a sharp rise in the number of victims who remain without a response from the company.
Irony and the fluid situation
The event took a dramatic turn when even cyber expert Osher Revach, who manages a support group for victims of blocks in Israel, suffered a sudden block on his personal Instagram account. In a conversation with C14, Revach explained that the phenomenon began to spread rapidly over the last 24 hours, stemming from a combination of an AI algorithm malfunction and suspected exploitation of security vulnerabilities (Meta AI Exploit) by hostile actors.
Around the world, verified users (Meta Verified) report complete helplessness. Reports on the X network reveal that human representatives admit in closed conversations that these are accidental blocks performed by artificial intelligence, but the company currently lacks the tools to fix this. In some cases, attackers have exploited the vulnerability to demand ransom from account owners in exchange for "releasing" the profile, taking advantage of the lack of human support at the tech giant.
"I was Meta Verified with zero TOS violations in over a decade of using the account. I have spent the last day trying to get human support from Meta with zero help."
It is important to emphasize that this is a dynamic situation and information regarding the scope of the malfunction continues to accumulate. Since Meta has not yet released an official statement or a sweeping software fix, data and instructions may change as the company attempts to halt the collapse. However, experience shows that passive waiting without filing an organized appeal may lead to the permanent loss of personal and business profiles.
"Instagram have banned my account, crentstocks… No warning. No proper reasoning. Was told by the human agent that on review no terms were violated and that this was an accidental ban by Meta’s AI System, which I’ve seen has wrongfully affected thousands more."
Practical steps to save the profile
For those whose accounts have been blocked, Revach presents an emergency guide to restoring access. First, one must click the appeal button (Appeal) in the application, enter an available email address, and provide the verification code sent to it. After that, one must enter the mobile phone number and perform an additional code verification. The critical stage comes in choosing the verification method: Revach recommends not uploading a photo of an ID card, but rather choosing the option of a second appeal (Request another review).
After submitting the request, the account will enter a review mode (Review) that usually lasts between 24 hours and 4 days, during which the profile is not visible to other users. Implementing these steps has proven effective, as Revach himself managed to restore his account to full activity within about 24 hours. Experts warn against turning to "fixers" or hackers online who promise to release the account for a fee, as in most cases this is another scam exploiting the distress of blocked users.
