Court Orders 103FM to Pay Nathan Zahavi 900,000 Shekels

The 103FM radio station is required to pay former radio host Nathan Zahavi approximately 900,000 shekels, following a ruling by the District Court.

According to a report by Avishai Grinzaig, the court determined that the suspension and dismissal measures taken against the host were carried out in direct violation of the employment agreement in effect between the parties. In addition to the primary compensation awarded to Zahavi, the court ordered the station to cover legal expenses totaling approximately 75,000 shekels.

The events leading to the lawsuit began in late 2022. In November of that year, the station decided to immediately suspend Zahavi from his program. This step was taken following a massive wave of public protest sparked by remarks the host made during a live broadcast. During the show, Zahavi directed his comments at people who wear tefillin, stating he would be happy if they "tied the tefillin to their throats and hanged themselves" — a statement that drew sharp condemnation from all sectors of society and ultimately led to the termination of his employment.

Despite the justified public outcry and the severity with which the station viewed the presenter's remarks, the court found that the manner in which the engagement was terminated failed to meet the legal standards required by the signed contract. The court clarified in its decision:

"An employer is obligated to act in accordance with the clauses of the employment contract and the mechanisms anchored within it, even when dealing with exceptional events that arouse great public resentment."

Consequently, the court ruled that the station breached its contractual obligations, necessitating the payment of the significant compensation sum, along with legal costs.
