President of Nigeria Bola Tinubu signed a decree in 2026 aimed at regulating the country's digital economy and creating a unified framework for overseeing the crypto market. This move follows years of regulatory ambiguity, during which various national bodies sent conflicting signals regarding digital assets.

Virtual assets, including Bitcoin, Ether, stablecoins, and blockchain-based securities, have become significant tools for money transfers, payments, and international trade in recent years. However, their growing adoption has raised concerns regarding money laundering, illegal activities, and potential instability for the local currency, the Naira.

As part of the decree, a new body called the "Virtual Assets Council" has been established, alongside a dedicated office within the Central Bank of Nigeria. The goal is to foster cooperation between regulators, redefine areas of responsibility, and build an advanced reporting and oversight system.

According to industry experts, the move may improve transparency and provide certainty for investors and businesses, though it does not resolve all issues. Remaining challenges include the oversight of decentralized exchanges, the rising use of dollar-pegged stablecoins, and the necessity for international cooperation in the face of a cross-border crypto market.
