The confrontation between the USA and Iran has entered a new phase, where there is less talk of mutual messages and more about the actual balance of power. According to a report in the Lebanese newspaper "Nidaa al-Watan", the West assesses that the path of understandings that characterized the relationship between Washington and Tehran recently has eroded, and that the American administration is gradually returning to applying military pressure tools with the goal of forcing Iran into broader concessions.

A Western diplomatic source told the newspaper that the memorandum of understanding upon which the relationship between the sides relied has "effectively ended". According to him, US President Donald Trump gave the Iranians an opportunity to show flexibility, but Tehran did not take advantage of it. The source noted that although Iran returned to the negotiating table after the understandings, the result was very limited. According to him, only partial progress was recorded on the nuclear issue, while on other issues Tehran maintained a rigid position and did not provide the response that Washington expected to receive.

From here, according to him, comes the return to military pressure: not necessarily as a preliminary stage to total war, but as a tool intended to raise the price for Iran and push it toward more far-reaching agreements.

Israel is still restrained - but the question is until when

According to the source, the American administration is still managing at this stage to control the pace of events regarding Israel and prevent it from taking independent actions that could ignite a broad regional confrontation. However, as the military campaign intensifies, the question becomes sharper as to whether Washington will eventually ask Israel to take a more direct part in the campaign.

According to him, there is no clear answer to this at the moment. However, he emphasizes that the USA relies to a large extent on the vast scope of intelligence that Israel holds on Iran. The central target, he claims, was and remains Iran itself - and not Hezbollah. The Lebanese organization is in second place in terms of priority, while the main attention is directed toward the Iranian nuclear infrastructure and the Israeli fear of further progress by Tehran in this field.

According to the source, for years information has been collected in Israel in very large volumes about the Iranian system - from the top of the governing pyramid to the military, security, scientific, and nuclear echelons. According to him, that intelligence effort also had a direct impact on understanding the structure of Hezbollah. He claims that a large part of the important information about the Lebanese organization is actually found in Iran, alongside prolonged Israeli intelligence activity inside Lebanon since the 2006 war.
