Kyiv Enters Survival Mode Amid Escalating Russian Strikes, Says Mayor
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko warns that the Ukrainian capital is entering survival mode as intensified Russian strikes target critical infrastructure and bridges ahead of winter.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced in an interview with AFP that the Ukrainian capital is entering a survival mode amid a severe escalation in Russian strikes ahead of winter. According to Klitschko, the ongoing attacks target critical infrastructure, bridges, and power grids, raising fears of a return to the harrowing conditions of previous winters when residents faced freezing temperatures without electricity or heating.
The Threat to Infrastructure and Bridges
Klitschko noted that recent Russian strikes have expanded to daytime hours, targeting central Kyiv and vital bridges crossing the Dnipro River. The disruption of these key transport arteries severely impacts urban mobility and logistics. While city authorities are exploring pontoon bridges as temporary alternatives, the daily bombardment continues to exact a heavy toll, with municipal health data showing at least 534 deaths in Kyiv since 2022.
"The best-case scenario for Putin is that we all leave and hand him our empty cities and our country," Klitschko stated during the interview, emphasizing that he will never call for a full evacuation of the capital.
Preparing for a Harsh Winter
City hall is working to establish alternative heating systems and stockpile fuel, food, and water. However, Klitschko warned that logistical preparations alone are insufficient without reliable air defense systems to protect the population and infrastructure. Recent polling by Gradus indicates that a significant percentage of Ukrainians are considering relocation if living conditions continue to deteriorate due to energy shortages and logistical disruptions.
