American biomedical company Kodiak Sciences saw its stock surge by nearly 200% on Nasdaq on Monday following positive results from an advanced clinical trial for eye disease treatments. The dramatic increase adds to a massive rally of over 450% in the company's stock over the past 12 months.

The company specializes in developing therapeutics for retinal diseases, including wet age-related macular degeneration, a severe eye condition that can lead to significant vision loss. Kodiak's developmental drugs aim to slow disease progression and help maintain visual acuity.

On Monday, the company reported success in a Phase 3 clinical trial, the final and most advanced stage before potential commercial approval applications. According to Kodiak, both tested drugs met the trial's primary endpoint and demonstrated non-inferiority compared to the existing standard-of-care treatment tested against them.

A Former Market Darling

Kodiak was previously a prominent star of the biomedical sector. During 2020, its stock skyrocketed amid positive early-stage trial data for KSI-301, a drug designed to treat retinal diseases while reducing the frequency of required injections. That same year, the company advanced to Phase 3 trials, raised over $600 million in capital, and secured a commercial manufacturing agreement with Lonza. However, the initial market enthusiasm eventually faded, and the stock erased a significant portion of its gains before this latest resurgence.
