Ken Griffin, one of the wealthiest and most influential financiers in the United States and founder of Citadel, the most profitable hedge fund in history in terms of cumulative earnings, announced a $3 billion donation to Carnegie Mellon University. This marks the largest single donation ever made by an individual to a higher education institution, breaking the previous record set in 2018 when Michael Bloomberg donated $1.8 billion to Johns Hopkins University.

Expanding to Miami and Investing in Tech

Griffin, 57, has an estimated net worth of $60.5 billion. He founded Citadel in 1990 while still a student at Harvard and has established himself as a dominant force in American finance. In recent years, Griffin shifted his business core to Miami, relocating Citadel's global headquarters there in 2022 and shaping South Florida's booming technology and business scene.

Out of the $3 billion donation, $2 billion will be allocated to establish a brand-new Carnegie Mellon campus in Miami. Construction is slated to begin in 2027, with the campus expected to welcome its first students in 2028, pending regulatory approvals. Eventually, the facility is projected to accommodate more than 3,500 students and approximately 300 faculty members.

Strengthening the Pittsburgh Roots

The remaining $1 billion will be directed toward Carnegie Mellon's historic campus in Pittsburgh. Half a billion dollars will be invested in the School of Computer Science, which will be renamed in Griffin's honor, while the other half-billion will support the university's strategic needs, including faculty recruitment and student financial aid.

Carnegie Mellon is globally renowned as a powerhouse in computer science, artificial intelligence, robotics, cybersecurity, and engineering. Griffin emphasized the strategic vision behind the funding, noting in interviews with Reuters and CNN that the initiative aims to cultivate the talent and research required to drive America's future industries.

The upcoming Miami campus will focus on cutting-edge global challenges, including healthcare, national security, energy, climate, and advanced manufacturing, fostering close collaboration between academia, government, and industry leaders.
