Jerusalem: Car theft suspect dies following police pursuit
The vehicle was stolen from the Katamon neighborhood. The suspect fled, drove against the flow of traffic, and died in a single-vehicle accident at the At-Tur junction. During the pursuit, police forces fired at the vehicle's tires. A police officer and a civilian were lightly injured.
A suspect in a car theft died last night (between Tuesday and Wednesday) during a police pursuit. The police stated that the suspect, whose identity has not been released, tried to flee from officers while driving recklessly, caused a single-vehicle accident at the At-Tur junction, and died of his wounds at the hospital after resuscitation attempts.
The incident began after a report was received by the police regarding a car theft in the south of the city. Patrol teams of the Jerusalem District from the Moriah, Lev HaBira, and Shalem stations identified the vehicle in motion and carried out actions to bring it to a stop. The suspect refused to obey the officers' orders and began to flee while posing a real danger to the forces and road users, which included driving against the flow of traffic.
The officers felt a real danger and, in order to carry out his arrest, fired in a targeted manner at the vehicle's tires after he did not respond to their demands to stop. Despite the shooting, the suspect continued to flee until he caused a single-vehicle accident at the At-Tur junction, during which he collided with a pole and a private vehicle. As a result of the collision, the suspect was evacuated from the scene in critical condition while undergoing resuscitation efforts, and later his death was determined at the hospital by medical personnel. A police officer and another civilian were lightly injured in the incident and were evacuated to receive medical treatment.
