Jonathan Erlich is stepping down as captain of the Israeli Davis Cup team after seven years in the role, the Israel Tennis Association announced on Thursday. The decision was reached by mutual agreement and in good spirits, concluding a remarkable 26-year chapter during which Erlich was an integral part of the national team—first as a player and later as captain. Erlich also holds the all-time record for appearances for the Israeli national team.

A Warm Farewell from the Association

Tennis Association Chairman Avi Peretz bid farewell to Erlich with warm words: "Today we mark the departure of a man who is much more than a captain or a player. Jonathan Erlich is flesh of our flesh and an integral part of us, of the identity and history of the tennis association. After 26 years of total dedication, we are parting ways professionally in good spirits and with full agreement, out of a mutual understanding that this is the time to open a new chapter for the team."

Peretz added: "I appreciate and love Jonathan very much, and our connection is much more than that between a chairman and a captain. Over the years, we have held many conversations, gone through quite a few challenges and significant moments together, and built a good, close relationship based on trust and mutual appreciation."

Closing a 26-Year Chapter

Erlich himself summarized a particularly long period with the national team: "From my perspective, this is the closing of a circle. From the first day I wore the national uniform in 2000 until today, I saw representing the State of Israel as a mission and I was a soldier of the country and the team. I am proud and will always be proud of the privilege given to me to represent Israel."

"As they say, nothing lasts forever, and I too must now clear the way. After more than 20 years as a player and another seven years as captain, perhaps it is truly time for fresh blood to come in, take the team forward, and try to lead it to further achievements," Erlich noted.

Erlich also thanked the players and the association for their support over the years, clarifying that he does not intend to cut ties with the national team, promising to continue supporting and helping in any way possible.
