Former US President Joe Biden Reveals Prostate Cancer Has Spread to Bones
Former US President Joe Biden revealed that his prostate cancer has spread to his bones since his diagnosis last spring, urging men not to delay health screenings.
Former US President Joe Biden revealed on Tuesday, during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, that his cancer has metastasized to his bones since his diagnosis last spring.
"For me, this year is more personal," Biden wrote. "More than 330,000 American men will hear the words we heard last spring, when I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. By the time we caught it, it had already spread to my bones."
Biden urged men to speak with their physicians and not delay screenings, noting that when the disease is detected early, the five-year survival rate is close to 100 percent. He thanked his medical teams and added that "the radiation treatment from last fall worked as intended, and I continue to do the things that matter to me, like finishing my memoir."
Biden concluded by urging the public to consult their doctors and ask tough questions. Biden was diagnosed with prostate cancer in May of last year. According to an official statement from the 83-year-old former president, although it is an aggressive form of prostate cancer, it appears to be hormone-sensitive, allowing for effective treatment.
Biden was diagnosed after experiencing urinary symptoms. Metastatic tumors are considered stage 4, the most advanced stage of cancer. His office stated that the cancer was graded 9 out of 10 on the Gleason scale, which measures the aggressiveness of prostate cancer. Earlier last month, the former president's son, Hunter Biden, revealed in an extensive interview with BBC Newsnight that his father's cancer "is spreading and has reached the bones."
