Jerusalem inaugurated the Unity mural near Teddy Stadium on Monday, commemorating Ori Danino and Hersh Goldberg-Polin z"l, two Jerusalem football fans who supported rival clubs, Beitar Jerusalem and Hapoel Jerusalem. The ceremony took place in the presence of their families, Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion, and representatives from both clubs.

Created by local artist Tomer Peretz, a lifelong Beitar Jerusalem fan, the mural depicts Ori and Hersh together at Teddy Stadium against a backdrop of crowded stands, filled with the energy and joy of Jerusalem football. Mayor Lion stated that their extraordinary friendship during 328 days in Hamas captivity became a symbol of brotherhood, mutual guarantee, and love transcending all divisions.

Backgrounds and Captivity

Ori and Hersh came from different backgrounds, growing up in different neighborhoods. Ori grew up in a Haredi family in Ramot and was a devoted Beitar fan, while Hersh, the son of American religious parents from Talpiot, passionately supported Hapoel. Both frequented Teddy Stadium from a young age.

Abducted on October 7, 2023, from separate locations, they were held together in the Gaza Strip. Testimonies from released hostages reveal that during 328 days of captivity, they forged a deep bond. They supported each other, shared food, and faced grueling conditions. When Hersh's dominant left arm was severed, Ori confronted their captors to demand medical care, which helped save his life.

Hersh's mother, Rachel Goldberg-Polin, reflected: > In our beautiful, complex, diverse, loved, frustrating, vibrant, and holy city, there are two groups that might look completely different. And then there were two boys whom fire brought together... Ultimately, Ori and Hersh became bound to each other, protected, guarded, fought, and breathed for one another. Only love remains. Two hearts. One city, Jerusalem. Together.

Commemoration and Messages

Elchanan Danino, Ori's father, noted: > Two stands, two colors, one tunnel, one light. Ori and Hersh came from different worlds and supported rival teams, but in the darkest place, they were first and foremost brothers. May the light they left behind continue to connect us.

Mayor Moshe Lion emphasized that the mural serves as a powerful reminder that what unites people is always greater than what divides them. Hapoel Jerusalem CEO Uri Schertsik added that true unity requires responsibility and active commitment to changing reality.
