Javier Aguirre Appointed as New Head Coach of Valencia
Valencia has officially appointed veteran Mexican manager Javier Aguirre as their new head coach on a contract running until the end of the season.
Valencia announced today (Wednesday) the appointment of Javier Aguirre as their new head coach. The veteran Mexican manager has signed a contract until the end of the season, replacing interim coach Oscar Sanchez, who had stepped in following the dismissal of Carlos Corberan last week.
Aguirre returns to Spanish football after a two-year hiatus during which he coached the Mexico national team. At this year's World Cup, Aguirre led Mexico to their first knockout stage victory since 1986 in a tournament held on home soil, before they were eliminated in the round of 16 following a 3:2 defeat to England.
The 67-year-old coach has extensive experience in Spain, having previously managed Osasuna, Atletico Madrid, Real Zaragoza, Espanyol, Leganes, and Mallorca. He led both Osasuna and Mallorca to the Copa del Rey final. Across 466 matches managed in La Liga, he has recorded 167 wins, 123 draws, and 176 losses.
After gathering just one point in their first five matches, Valencia dismissed Corberan. Sanchez stood on the sidelines for the next two league games before the international break, in which Valencia defeated Alaves and subsequently lost to Real Sociedad.
