"I was brainwashed": The confession of a former Playboy Bunny

Former Playboy Bunny and wife of magazine founder Hugh Hefner, Crystal Hefner, is once again publicly reflecting on their complex relationship. The 40-year-old shared details about her life behind the gates of the infamous mansion while appearing on the podcast No One Asked Her: "I think I was completely brainwashed, but there was nothing outside that confirmed I was right."
Crystal, who married Hefner when she was 26 and he was 86, admitted that the 60-year age gap and her husband's status made her doubt her own reality. "The media put Hefner on such a pedestal that I thought to myself: if everyone sees him as an amazing, extraordinary person, then something must be wrong with me," she recalled.
She revealed that she was under the constant supervision of 70 employees while living in the mansion. "Movie night was at six, and I had to be there. It was disguised control, basically my curfew," she explained. Crystal added that after leaving the mansion, she felt so disoriented that she didn't even know how to turn on the lights in her car, as she had always been home before dark.
In her 2024 memoir, "Only Say Good Things: Surviving Playboy and Finding Myself," Crystal describes the emotional abuse she endured. Hefner dictated everything from her nail polish color to the need to bleach her roots. "If the roots started growing back, he would touch them and tell me to go fix it," she shared. According to Crystal, she felt a need to protect her husband, which she attributes to Stockholm syndrome and living inside a "bubble."
