A resident of Jaffa has shared a harrowing account on social media, claiming he was brutally attacked near the Jaffa Port simply because of his sexual orientation. According to the victim, the incident occurred after he attended a concert at the Barby club with a friend named Erel.

The Attack at Jaffa Port

Writing on Instagram, the victim recounted that as they walked back from the performance, a man began shouting homophobic slurs at him, apparently provoked by his attire. "I responded because I hadn't done anything wrong, and out of a naive belief that I wouldn't let hatred diminish or frighten me in my own place," he wrote.

According to his testimony, the situation rapidly escalated when the assailant grabbed a helmet and began beating him violently. Shortly thereafter, four or five additional men allegedly joined in. "They just saw an opportunity to take part in a lynching of a gay man," he stated, describing moments where he feared for his life and claimed attackers attempted to stab him with a broken glass bottle.

The hatred is here, it is alive, it is violent, and last night it almost took my life.

Past Incidents in the Area

This is not the first time violent homophobic attacks have been reported in the Jaffa Port area. In August 2020, two young gay men were assaulted by a group of youths after facing verbal abuse and spitting. Two minors from Lod were prosecuted, and in April 2023, courts convicted them of assault, with one also found guilty of a hate crime based on sexual orientation.

Another severe incident occurred in November 2024, when two transgender women reported being attacked in Jaffa with a hammer alongside threats to their lives. A suspect from Netanya was arrested, though he claimed the altercation stemmed from a road dispute rather than gender identity. The new testimony has reignited public concern regarding the personal safety of LGBTQ+ individuals in the city's public spaces.
