From Stardom to Debt: Actor Itay Turgeman Opens Up About His Financial Fall
Actor Itay Turgeman opens up about his financial collapse, sinking one million shekels into debt, working manual jobs, and finding personal renewal.

From the heights of Israeli cinema, winning a historic Ophir Award at a young age and starring in top-rated television series, to living on the 20th floor of a luxury skyscraper, Itay Turgeman experienced life on the fast track of the entertainment industry. Yet beneath the glamour and fame, a quiet financial crisis was unfolding. When work offers suddenly stopped, the bubble burst, leading to a dramatic downfall.
Turgeman opened up on the Channel 12 program MKR, recalling how he spent roughly two and a half to three years without acting roles or job offers. He had to pack up his high-rise apartment, rent a shipping container, check his bank balance, and realize he was one million shekels in debt. Returning to his parents' home, he spent two paralyzed months confined to the childhood bedroom he had left at age 17, facing an overwhelming sense of failure.
The Humbling Reality of Odd Jobs
The desperate chase for a livelihood pushed him into odd jobs far removed from the stage and film sets. For three years, he installed doors alongside his father, and prior to that, he worked in a beverage warehouse. He reflected on the complex and sometimes humiliating reality of famous individuals in financial distress who cannot simply take standard service jobs.
People ordered doors, and that was the day my father scheduled the installation. A knock on the door, they open it, and the installer arrives. It was so difficult for my rotten ego, it was so hard.
Finding Gratitude in the Storm
Yet it was precisely from the depths of hardship that a profound realization emerged. Cycling to the train station at four in the morning to work in a warehouse for 300 shekels a day—battling rainstorms and broken schedules—he found a strange sense of clarity, screaming words of gratitude into the dark sky for the harsh conditions crafted for his personal healing.
Today, as a family man, Sabbath observer, mental healing coach, and an actor returning to the stage, Turgeman looks back on his journey, understanding that the cracks and financial loss were ultimately his gateway to true renewal.
