Italian Opposition Boycotts Antisemitism Bill Vote

The Democratic Party (PD), Italy's primary opposition faction, dramatically boycotted a parliamentary committee vote on Wednesday regarding a controversial major antisemitism bill. The legislation aims to enshrine the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism into Italian law.

While the right-wing coalition led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni argues that the law is urgently needed to protect Jewish communities amid a surge in antisemitic incidents following the October 7, 2023 massacres and the ongoing war in Gaza, the left-wing opposition strongly objects to specific provisions.

"The definition included in the bill is divisive and risks censoring legitimate criticism of the Israeli government's policies, military actions in the Gaza Strip, and the West Bank," a Democratic Party source told Reuters.

Divisions Within the Left

The boycott highlights deep fractures within Italy's center-left. While the Democratic Party has previously criticized Israel's military operations, it has maintained a more moderate stance compared to its allies, the Five Star Movement and the Greens and Left Alliance (AVS), which have levied accusations of genocide against Israel—allegations that Israel strongly rejects.

Despite the political gridlock and opposition pushback, the legislation is expected to proceed for a final vote in the lower house of the Italian Parliament.
