Employees aged 50 to 59 in Israel earn an average of approximately 21,300 NIS per month, representing the highest peak across all age groups in the labor market. However, this average conceals a significant structural gap, as the median salary hovers around 15,000 NIS, remaining slightly lower than the median recorded for workers in their forties.

Salary Stagnation and Top Earners

Data compiled from employer reports to the National Insurance Institute, adjusted to current wage levels following a 5.2% increase in the national average wage measured by the Central Bureau of Statistics, reveals that workers in this decade have largely reached their peak earning potential. The high overall average is heavily skewed by a small group of top earners, predominantly senior executives.

In the decade following age 50, the average salary rises by a mere 3.3% compared to workers in their forties, an increase of about 700 NIS per month. The true economic momentum occurs earlier in a career, with average wages jumping by roughly 22% between workers in their thirties and forties. Currently, approximately 630,000 salaried employees are employed within the 50-to-59 age bracket.

Sectoral Wage Disparities

In education and service professions, salary ranges remain moderate. Teachers aged 50 earn between 12,500 and 17,000 NIS, kindergarten teachers range from 10,500 to 14,000 NIS, customer service representatives earn 11,500 to 14,000 NIS, and social workers range from 13,000 to 17,000 NIS. Certified electricians earn between 14,500 and 19,500 NIS.

Professions requiring academic degrees and professional licensing command higher compensation. Registered nurses earn between 19,500 and 23,500 NIS, accountants range from 19,500 to 25,000 NIS, and civil engineers earn 19,500 to 24,500 NIS. Pharmacists earn between 18,000 and 23,500 NIS, while attorneys at major law firms earn between 24,500 and 31,000 NIS.

High-Tech and Gender Gaps

High-tech salaries soar to roughly three times the compensation of service sector jobs. Software developers in their fifties earn between 34,500 and 42,000 NIS, DevOps professionals reach 39,500 to 49,500 NIS, and engineers specializing in semiconductors, algorithms, and machine learning command salaries between 41,000 and 54,500 NIS.

The gender wage gap reaches its peak during this decade. Men aged 50 to 59 earn an average of 26,400 NIS compared to 16,700 NIS for women, representing a disparity of approximately 58%. By comparison, the gender wage gap stands at 50% for workers in their thirties and 55% for those in their forties.

Following age 60, earnings decline significantly as the average salary drops to approximately 15,400 NIS and the median falls to 9,900 NIS, driven by employees reducing their working hours or retiring.
