Shino Zuares, chairman of the Israel Football Association, contacted UEFA with a request to allow the players of the Israeli national team to wear black armbands in tonight's match against the Republic of Ireland, in memory of the victims of the October 7 massacre.

According to a report by Sport 5, UEFA approved the request today, and the players will take to the pitch with black armbands pinned to the lapels of their shirts.

The decision comes against the backdrop of the Irish national team's conduct during the previous match between the two sides. Back then, the Irish players threatened to boycott the match, ultimately deciding to take the field with black armbands, skip some of the ceremonies, and donate their match bonuses.

During that same encounter, the Irish players refused to shake hands with the Israeli players and bowed their heads during the playing of Hatikvah in protest. The match ended in a 3-0 victory for the Irish side, with all three goals scored in the opening minutes.

Tonight, the Israeli national team will attempt to secure a victory against Ireland while wearing the black armbands to honor the victims of the October 7 tragedy. Beyond its symbolic significance, a win would also grant the squad its first three points since the start of the UEFA Nations League campaign.
