Israel Desalination Plants Resume Full Operation After Algal Crisis
Israel's desalination plants have resumed operations after a two-week crisis caused by an algal bloom in the Mediterranean. The national water system is now fully stable.

Israel's national water system has stabilized following a severe two-week environmental crisis caused by an unprecedented algal bloom in the Eastern Mediterranean. The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure announced that all six desalination plants have resumed operations, with some running at full capacity and others partially.
The Algal Bloom Crisis
The crisis began in late August when a massive outbreak of cyanobacteria algae created exceptional turbidity in seawater, clogging filtration systems at desalination facilities that normally supply about 80% of the country's drinking water. The sudden shutdowns prompted emergency measures, including increased pumping from Lake Kinneret and aquifers, as well as temporary water restrictions in several municipalities, including Tel Aviv.
"The water economy has returned to full stability, and water supply to private consumers and agriculture continues as usual," the Ministry of Energy stated.
Lessons Learned and Infrastructure Upgrades
To prevent future disruptions, authorities are reviewing key infrastructure vulnerabilities. Proposed solutions include extending intake pipes westward into deeper, cleaner waters, upgrading pre-filtration systems, and securing a national emergency stockpile of thousands of filtration membranes. While the immediate crisis has passed, the Water Authority continues to urge the public to use water wisely.
