Apple's iPhone Duo Arrives in Israel Following iPhone Air Price Plunge

The upcoming pre-order for the iPhone Duo marks a significant milestone for Israeli consumers, as the country enters the first wave of Apple's global rollouts for its very first foldable device. However, this launch is shadowed by the recent history of Apple's experimental fourth models. Last year's launch of the iPhone Air, intended to carve out a lightweight and ultra-thin niche, ultimately faltered due to underwhelming battery life, a single camera setup, and a steep price tag that was 1,000 shekels higher than the base iPhone 17.

Despite its initial commercial failure, the dramatic collapse in the iPhone Air's price has transformed it into a surprisingly compelling bargain. Originally retailing for around 4,899 shekels, major Israeli electronics retailers such as Makhsanei Hashmal, Partner, KSP, and Dinamika have slashed prices down to 2,799 shekels, with even deeper discounts available in Eilat. Liron Katz, VP of Business Development at Makhsanei Hashmal, noted that the device suffered from weak demand and rapid depreciation due to a lack of genuine innovation beyond its slim chassis. Nevertheless, at nearly half its original price, the compromise on battery and camera performance becomes entirely defensible for budget-conscious consumers seeking a lighter form factor.

Looking ahead to the iPhone Duo, Apple is completely breaking away from conventional smartphone form factors by introducing its first foldable device with a customized interface, enhanced multitasking capabilities, and a brand-new aspect ratio. Much like the iPhone Air, early indicators suggest some familiar compromises: battery life trails behind the iPhone 18 Pro, and the camera system lacks a dedicated telephoto lens, relying instead on a modified iPhone 17 array with video enhancements.

Unlike the iPhone Air, however, the iPhone Duo carries an exceptionally high price tag. Pelephone and other carriers will offer the foldable device starting at 8,199 shekels—more than 2,000 shekels higher than the premium iPhone 18 Pro Max. Market analysts predict that initial supplies in Israel will be extremely limited, creating a massive 'pistachio crunch' effect where early adopters and automated bots sweep up available units within seconds. Whether Apple can succeed in mainstreaming foldables where competitors have spent years trying remains to be seen, but the high-stakes launch is just around the corner.
