Writing a review of a new iPhone becomes more challenging every year. Apple's flagship devices leave little room for radical reinvention, meaning key updates typically hide beneath the hood in processors and battery efficiency. Nonetheless, we gathered to evaluate the iPhone 18 Pro, while the Pro Max model was unavailable for testing. This year, with the launch of the iPhone Duo, the company's first foldable device, the standard flagship acts almost as a secondary player. Still, global attention remains fixed on it, raising the inevitable question of whether an upgrade is worthwhile. The answer, as always, is complex.
The device arrived on a Friday morning for a testing period of just under 48 hours. It came in Burgundy Red, and unlike other reviewers who praised the shade, I found it less appealing. It is not a vibrant red, but rather a dark hue leaning toward eggplant purple. Glacier Blue, the metallic alternative, proved more attractive, though aesthetic preferences vary. The lineup also includes traditional silver and black finishes.
Design and Display
In terms of dimensions and weight, the device is five grams heavier than the 17 Pro, weighing 211 grams compared to 206 grams—a negligible difference most users will not notice. It measures 150 mm in length, making it 0.4 mm longer than the 17 Pro, and 71.9 mm in width, which is also 0.4 mm wider. Both devices feature a 6.3-inch display, sharing a highly similar design language with a triple-lens rear camera setup and glass backing, though the aluminum frame is now color-matched to the rear panel.
It is an undeniably gorgeous device, offering an ergonomic elegance that surpasses most handsets I have ever held. Apple has maximized its industrial design over recent generations, reaching a winning formula unlikely to change soon, even if a refreshing shift would be welcome in future iterations. Upon powering it on, the OLED display shines brightly and clearly, remaining easily legible even under direct sunlight thanks to a peak brightness of 3,000 nits and Super Retina technology.
The first noticeable adjustment is the reduction of the Dynamic Island, the elongated black cutout housing the front-facing camera and background activities. This shrinkage is achieved by relocating part of the Face ID apparatus—specifically the infrared camera—underneath the display, while other components remain in place. Despite its smaller footprint, its utility has expanded, allowing it to display three simultaneous background activities.
Software and Apple Intelligence
The initial setup process is, as expected from Apple, seamless and rapid. Synchronization with a previous Apple device takes mere seconds, including transferring credit cards to the Wallet app and syncing the photo gallery upon logging into iCloud. Following the swift configuration, I explored the newly released iOS 27 operating system. Having an iPhone 15 Pro running the same software on hand, the contrast is stark. The speed with which the iPhone 18 Pro executes the upgraded, highly capable Siri—currently available in beta and English only—is remarkably impressive.
The integration between Apple's proprietary hardware and software shines brightly here. The formidable processing power of the iPhone 18 Pro handles advanced AI workloads effortlessly, a level of synergy that fragmented Android ecosystems often struggle to match.
While this is not a comprehensive iOS 27 review, the operating system deserves close attention. The enhanced Siri executes complex voice commands seamlessly, from drafting messages and searching through emails, photos, and texts, to retrieving specific memories like photos of my son and me on a trip to Greece two years ago. Conversely, Hebrew language support remains severely limited at this stage, and numerous features cater specifically to iMessage rather than popular alternatives like WhatsApp. I found the most practical application of AI within the camera interface via Visual Intelligence, enabling instant identification of plants and objects captured through the lens—a capability already established in the Android ecosystem for several years.
Camera System: Full Manual Control
The most substantial hardware upgrade on the iPhone 18 Pro lies within the camera array. For the first time, the primary camera features a physical, visibly adjustable variable aperture. By comparison, the iPhone 17 Pro featured a fixed aperture of f/1.7. Users can literally watch the mechanical blades expand and contract in real time.
For those unfamiliar with photography fundamentals, the aperture controls the lens opening that lets light into the sensor. A wider aperture lets in more light, while a narrower aperture restricts it. Lower f-numbers represent wider openings, whereas higher f-numbers indicate narrower ones. A wide aperture (such as f/1.48) creates a shallow depth of field, resulting in a sharp subject against a blurred background, ideal for portraits or close-ups. Conversely, a closed aperture (such as f/8) keeps more of the frame in sharp focus, making it suitable for landscapes.
The new aperture extends down to an impressive f/1.48. However, transitions between settings are stepped rather than infinitely adjustable, offering predefined stops at f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, and f/4. This upgrade caters to advanced mobile photographers seeking granular control, though it falls short of professional DSLR freedom. Portrait mode defaults to f/1.8, though background blur is digitally augmented rather than purely optical.
The redesigned camera app introduces manual shutter speed adjustment, controlling exposure duration to freeze fast-moving subjects or capture low-light scenes. White balance customization is also included. Among these professional additions, one standout feature for everyday users is photographic styles, which apply cinematic or vintage cinematic tones. A Soft Skin filter is also available, smoothing complexions in selfies, alongside advanced AI photo editing tools capable of completely altering perspective, composition, and object placement.
Performance and Battery Life
The second major upgrade is the A20 Pro chip, built on an advanced 2-nanometer architecture. It delivers superior processing speeds alongside enhanced energy efficiency. According to official Apple metrics, the Pro model supports up to 36 hours of video playback, while the Pro Max reaches 45 hours. Charging speeds allow the device to reach 50% capacity in approximately 15 minutes via cable, or 30 minutes wirelessly.
Multitasking performance is blistering, with app launch times and gallery saving speeds operating at zero latency. Furthermore, the newly integrated vapor chamber thermal system significantly reduces overheating during intensive tasks. Apple notes that this thermal dissipation structure covers three times the surface area of the previous generation—a massive advantage in warmer climates like Israel.
Pricing and Verdict
The most discouraging aspect of the iPhone 18 Pro remains its price tag. Apple continues its upward pricing trajectory, influenced by surging component costs and global manufacturing expenses. The base 256GB storage configuration in Israel starts between 5,029 and 5,699 NIS, with higher tiers climbing steeply.
Despite the steep cost, should you upgrade? If you are transitioning from an older device—such as an iPhone 15 or earlier—the leap is entirely justified, especially given the hardware demands of iOS 27 and its advanced AI suite. Professional mobile creators will similarly benefit from the physical aperture controls. For other users, careful consideration is warranted, though brand loyalty often prevails.
