Artificial Intelligence, Drone Threats, and 'Achilles Shield': Israel and Greece Launch Air Defense Pact
Israel and Greece are set to sign a 3.1 billion euro agreement next week to establish the 'Achilles Shield' air defense system. The project will integrate advanced Israeli technologies, including Spyder, Barak MX, and David's Sling, utilizing artificial intelligence to optimize threat response.

Israel and Greece are advancing their security cooperation. This coming Monday, a deal to establish a Greek air and missile defense system is expected to be signed in Tel Aviv. The large-scale project, known as "Achilles Shield," is estimated to cost approximately 3.1 billion euros and represents one of the most significant defense collaborations between the two nations.
Following the signing, the implementation phase is expected to last about 35 months. The agreement will be finalized between the procurement authorities of the Greek Ministry of Defense and SIBAT, the International Defense Cooperation Directorate at the Israeli Ministry of Defense.
The Greek objective is to establish a multi-layered system that connects various defense assets to counter a wide range of threats, from drones and unmanned aerial vehicles to missiles and ballistic threats. The program will integrate Greece's existing assets with advanced Israeli systems, including Spyder, Barak MX, and David's Sling, alongside Patriot systems. The core concept is to create a unified network where sensors, command and control systems, and interceptors communicate to select the most cost-effective defense measure for each specific threat.
The deal also includes a significant industrial component for Greece. Approximately 12 Greek companies are expected to participate, with their volume of activity exceeding 700 million euros, representing about 25% of the project. For Athens, this ensures that the investment leads to knowledge transfer, local capacity development, and the strengthening of the domestic defense industry. A central point of negotiation was access to the system's source code, which will grant Greece greater independence in maintenance and future upgrades.
At the heart of the system is an advanced command and control platform incorporating artificial intelligence. In a reality where adversaries launch large numbers of low-cost UAVs, using expensive interceptor missiles for every target is not economical. The system will process data from radars and sensors to identify threats and assist forces in choosing the appropriate response.
This signing marks a significant milestone in security relations. For Greece, it is an effort to build a modern, multi-dimensional defense layer against an evolving threat environment. For Israel, it is a key project that deepens security ties with one of its closest regional partners.
