Luxury Prison Compound with Golf Simulator Discovered in Indonesia
A surprise raid on an Indonesian prison near Jakarta uncovered a luxury compound for inmates featuring TVs, air conditioning, and a golf simulator, sparking a major corruption investigation.
A surprise raid on an Indonesian prison revealed luxury living quarters equipped with large TVs, sofas, refrigerators, and air conditioning units. Investigators also found luxury cars, a gym, and a golf simulator under construction at the Cibinong prison near Jakarta.
The Indonesian Ombudsman conducted an unannounced inspection in September following tips about unusual prison conditions. Inspectors discovered a separate compound with at least ten fully furnished residential units resembling apartments rather than prison cells.
Luxury Amenities and Corruption
Footage released by investigators showed spacious bedrooms with large beds, seating areas, dining tables, and electrical appliances. Authorities also discovered alcoholic beverages, including whiskey and beer, as well as an unlocked back exit leading to a wooded area.
According to officials, the buildings originally served as staff quarters but were allegedly converted into inmate housing in exchange for bribes. Authorities questioned 52 prisoners and suspended five prison officials, including the facility warden. Ten illegal structures within the compound have already been demolished.
Public Outrage
The scandal has sparked public outrage in Indonesia, reigniting debates over systemic corruption within the nation's correctional system. Experts noted that wealthy inmates have previously secured special privileges, but the scale of the amenities discovered in this facility makes the case particularly extraordinary.
