InDnegev Festival Returns to Full Scale in the Southern Desert
The InDnegev Festival returns in full force for its 2026 edition in the Eshkol region, marking its comeback after the October 7 tragedy with five stages and top artists.
In October 2023, the InDnegev Festival was slated to be its largest edition yet, with thousands gathering in the desert near Kibbutz Gvulot. But on October 7, just days before the opening, everything shattered. Crew members evacuated under fire, and many associated with the festival were killed, wounded, or taken hostage. The heart broke, and the festival was inevitably called off.
After skipping 2024 and returning in a scaled-down, emotional pop-up format in late 2025 following the hostage release deal, InDnegev is now marking its nearly 20-year milestone by returning in full force. Featuring five stages, dozens of performances, and the mesmerizing landscape of Israel's southern desert, the 2026 edition bridges the gap between independent roots and contemporary mainstream icons, including a special electronic-infused set by Rita alongside Ehud Banai, Monica Sex, and Nono.
Building from the Ground Up
Speaking to mako while en route to the site, co-founder Asaf Ben David describes the immense logistical undertaking of bringing the festival back to its full scale. "We already erected the main iron structures last week, and now we are setting up the fences, the crew compounds, the logistical hubs, and the shading nets," Ben David explains. "It's a slow, complex process with many layers, but this is the exact moment it transitions from abstract planning into tangible reality.
The connection to the Eshkol Regional Council makes this homecoming particularly poignant. Ben David reflects on the heavy toll borne by the local community and the festival's own team since that fateful day in October. "We are an organic part of the Eshkol Council, an area that took a devastating blow," he notes. Despite subsequent security challenges, including regional escalations, the decision to press forward was rooted in emotional resilience rather than cold calculation.
"We have an incredible, devoted team, a huge community, and artists who want this and want to be part of it. We try to focus exclusively on what we can control," says Ben David.
A Launchpad for Israeli Music
Over the years, InDnegev has established itself as an essential milestone and launchpad for emerging talent, serving as a vital stop for artists like Noga Erez, Ravid Plotnik, and Esther Rada before they achieved household-name status. The musical spectrum has similarly expanded, incorporating dub and reggae sound systems, dedicated electronic stages, and the rich growth of Israeli hip-hop.
Ultimately, InDnegev remains deeply tied to the land and the turbulent realities of the south. As the festival prepares to open its gates for a full celebration of music and freedom, it carries the enduring memory of the past alongside a fierce determination to look forward.
