Indian Woman Presumed Dead and Cremated Returns Alive After Two Years
A 28-year-old Indian woman named Shivani, presumed dead and cremated over two years ago, has returned home alive, sparking a complex police investigation into her disappearance and the identity of the cremated body.
An extraordinary turn of events has unfolded in India, where a 28-year-old woman named Shivani, who was presumed dead for over two years and whose body was believed to have been cremated, suddenly returned to her parents' home in Lucknow, leaving her family and local authorities in absolute shock.
The Disappearance and False Identification
The mystery began in May 2024 when Shivani vanished without a trace. Two months later, police discovered a severely decomposed female body in a canal. Summoned to identify the remains, Shivani's family claimed the body was hers, basing their identification on a thread tied around the wrist and a ring on the finger. Following the identification, the family cremated the body in accordance with traditional funeral rites.
Shortly after, Shivani's mother filed a severe criminal complaint against Shivani's husband, Anand Singh, and six of his family members, accusing them of harassment, kidnapping, and causing a "dowry death."
DNA Discrepancy and the Sudden Return
However, cracks in the case soon emerged. A subsequent DNA test conducted on the remains revealed no genetic match to Shivani's family. Consequently, the court dismissed the severe charges against the husband's family.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Vikas Pandey explained:
"The body was in an advanced state of decomposition, making facial recognition impossible. The family relied solely on personal items for identification."
The ultimate twist occurred last weekend when Shivani walked back into her parents' home. During initial police questioning, she revealed that during her 27-month absence, she had been living in another area with a man named Jawed. She claimed that although he had urged her to return home, she had refused to do so for a long time.
Ongoing Investigation
Investigators are now working to determine whether her stay with Jawed was voluntary or coerced, and efforts are underway to locate him to verify her account.
Shivani has been taken into custody for comprehensive questioning and to record her official statement before a judge. Police have also reopened the investigation to identify the deceased woman whose body was found in the canal and mistakenly cremated, while re-evaluating the legal status of the case involving her husband, Anand Singh.
