Wizz Air Compensation for Israelis: Eligible Customers to Receive Benefits
Following a class action lawsuit against Wizz Air over flight cancellations to Israel, 277 customers will receive a three-month membership extension. The court ruled that the proceedings provided tangible benefits to the affected group.
277 Israelis who purchased a membership in the Wizz Air flight club are set to receive three additional months of membership free of charge, following a class action proceeding at the Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court. Judge Guy Forer approved the petitioner's withdrawal from the lawsuit after determining that the proceedings brought real benefit to the group members.
The case concerned the "Wizz All You Can Fly" club, launched in August 2024, which offers members the option to book unlimited flights for an annual fee of 599 euros, plus a booking fee of 9.99 euros per flight. The petitioner joined the club at an introductory price of 499 euros per year.
The lawsuit claimed that the company collected full membership fees despite suspending flights to and from Israel for several months due to the "Iron Swords" war. The petitioner argued that members did not receive an extension or a pro-rata refund for the period they were unable to utilize the service.
Wizz Air rejected these claims, arguing that the flight cessation was due to severe and unforeseen security conditions, which it classified as force majeure. The company further maintained that club members could still use their benefits on flights between various international destinations.
According to an audit, the affected group includes 277 passengers who paid 499 euros each. As part of the settlement, Wizz Air committed to locating these individuals and automatically extending their membership by three months at no additional cost.
Additionally, the company has updated the club's terms: should flights to and from a country be suspended for 30 consecutive days, members are now entitled to cancel their membership and receive a pro-rata refund for the remaining period.
The court approved the settlement. The petitioner will receive 2,250 euros in compensation, while legal counsel will receive 7,750 euros plus VAT. A portion of the payment is contingent upon the company proving it has successfully notified all group members of their membership extension.
