During the match between Gençlerbirliği and Fenerbahçe in the opening round of the Turkish First League, fans of the home team noticed a four-year-old child wearing the shirt of the Istanbul rival while sitting in their stands, and demanded that he and his father remove it immediately. The incident sparked great anger on social media and in local sports media, leading to the arrest of one person by the police for questioning.
While the incident was taking place, a police officer on site noticed what was happening and decided to intervene quickly. He took the frightened child in his arms and moved him and his father to a protected area in the stadium to prevent further escalation. The Gençlerbirliği club was quick to issue an official statement of condemnation in which it apologized to the family and emphasized that such behavior contradicts the club's values and its long-standing traditions.
Fenerbahçe's management also responded to the incident and made direct contact with the child, Göktuğ Almacı, and his father, Salami. The Istanbul club condemned the pressure and threats exerted on the young fan in the stands and decided to invite them as guests of honor to the team's home game today (Tuesday) in the Champions League playoffs against Lille.
