The discovery took place in Sint-Gillis-bij-Dendermonde, a town outside Brussels. The workers were busy laying a new sewer pipe and had to remove part of the building's foundations. During the work, they suddenly noticed objects found underground — and it very quickly became clear that it was gold.
Kuba, an 18-year-old worker who was on site, told the media that at first he thought they were ordinary euro coins. Only after they examined the find closely did the team realize what they had in their hands. As the excavation continued, more coins and gold bars were discovered.
The project manager, Mario, said that the workers called him after they discovered the gold. He arrived at the scene, held the gold that was found himself, and as the excavation continued, more and more coins and bars were revealed. At this stage, he first called his supervisor and then the police. The local police arrived at the site, documented and cataloged the findings, and then transferred them to a secure federal government safe. However, despite the extraordinary discovery, the workers will not be able to simply take the treasure home.
According to Belgian law, the legal owner of the gold has five years during which they can claim it. The project manager clarified that the option of keeping the gold was not practical for him, partly because of the huge amount found and because such an act would be considered theft. The building where the gold was discovered is owned by an organization that provides social support to the local community.
