Israel Land Authority Acting Chief Eliyahu Keeps Post After Netanyahu Intervenes
Housing Minister Haim Katz extended Yehuda Eliyahu's tenure as acting director of the Israel Land Authority following Prime Minister Netanyahu's intervention, bypassing legal term limits ahead of elections.

Housing and Construction Minister Haim Katz has reversed his initial decision and extended the tenure of Yehuda Eliyahu as acting director of the Israel Land Authority (ILA), following intervention by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Coalition Dynamics and Netanyahu's Intervention
Just weeks ago, Katz had summoned Eliyahu for a hearing with the intention of dismissing him from the post. However, after a clarification meeting mediated by Netanyahu, the decree was lifted. Eliyahu, who is considered a close associate of Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, will remain in office.
The extension overcomes legal hurdles previously raised by the ministry's legal advisor, who opposed extending the temporary appointment beyond the six-month statutory limit, accumulated across successive acting directors. Netanyahu's direct involvement secured the special approval required to keep Eliyahu at the helm until after the upcoming elections.
Implications for the Housing Market
Critics point out that the ILA is approaching a full year without a permanent chief, severely impacting land allocation and marketing. The persistent leadership vacuum has contributed to a notable decline in residential land tenders, raising concerns about future housing price spikes.
"I welcome the cooperation to promote Jewish settlement in the Galilee, the Negev, and all parts of the Land of Israel, and extend Yehuda Eliyahu's tenure," Minister Haim Katz stated.
While the extension ensures administrative continuity through the election period, housing advocates warn that temporary leadership fails to address structural deficiencies in state land management and soaring property costs.
