For the first time since the outbreak of the war, three and a half years ago, the IDF is holding a large-scale safety conference today, Tuesday, following a rise in the scope and severity of operational accidents and safety incidents. Led by Deputy Chief of the General Staff, Major General Tamir Yadai, the conference will focus on strengthening operational discipline, foundational safety rules, and military protocols, convening all deputy battalion commanders and above.

Mounting Casualties and Operational Strain

The decision to hold the conference comes after several recent incidents resulted in fatalities and injuries during IDF operations. Last weekend, Captain Eliav Haim Tzeplomus, 21, a combat officer in the 7th Brigade's 603rd Battalion from Haifa, was killed during operational activity in southern Lebanon. Another soldier sustained minor injuries in a Lebanon operational accident, and a separate incident in Gaza recently killed two reservists, Master Sergeant (res.) Nadav Kally and Master Sergeant (res.) Ofek Mualem, following a strike by an IDF drone.

Reviewing Lessons and Halting Drone Operations

During the conference, brigade commanders will present safety incidents from their respective sectors, discussing ways to improve operational conduct and prevent similar failures. A soldier severely injured due to a weapons safety violation committed by a close friend is also scheduled to address the forum.

The fatal incident in southern Lebanon occurred on Thursday when a Hummer vehicle overturned near the Litani River, injuring three other soldiers lightly. Meanwhile, the tragic Gaza incident last month involved a standard operational drone that crashed inside an outpost under unclear circumstances. As reservists Kally and Mualem approached the downed drone, it detonated, fatally wounding both before they could be evacuated to Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon. Following a preliminary investigation, the IDF has suspended all drone operations pending further review.
