IDF Officer School Graduates Record 7,200 Officers Amid Ongoing War
Col. Eliav Elbaz completes his tenure as commander of the IDF Officer School (Bahad 1), reporting a 50% surge in graduates to meet multi-arena defense challenges and underground warfare demands.
The IDF Officer School (Bahad 1) is undergoing a major transition as Col. Eliav Elbaz concludes his two-year tenure to assume command of the 252nd Division. His leadership period was marked by historic shifts, with annual officer graduation rates surging by 50% from 4,800 before the war to 7,200 by August 2026.
This massive increase is driven by the expansion of combat units across all fronts, including the Yahalom combat engineering unit, air defense arrays (Iron Dome, David's Sling, Arrow), Home Front Command, and armored corps.
Advanced Combat Requirements and Mental Resilience
According to Col. Elbaz, today's platoon commanders must master technologies and tactics that far exceed the requirements of previous decades. Modern junior officers operate digital command-and-control systems, direct airstrikes, coordinate artillery, and deploy drone and robotic systems under fire.
Training regimens have been intensified, featuring 70-kilometer navigation marches with gear weighing 40% of the cadet's body weight. Elbaz highlighted the psychological demands of modern warfare:
"Our platoon commanders face unprecedented mental challenges. Consider a commander who loses three soldiers in an incident, manages a mass casualty event, and must lead troops who have not been home in a month. We have shifted our focus to mental resilience so they can function effectively in crisis."
This resilience was tested in September 2025 in Rafah, when a Bahad 1 patrol vehicle struck an explosive device. The blast killed company commander Maj. Omri-Chai Ben-Moshe and three cadets: Lt. Eran Shalem, Lt. Eitan Avner Ben-Yitzhak, and Lt. Ron Arieli. Three other soldiers were moderately to severely wounded. The remaining cadets returned to operational duties the following day to destroy infrastructure.
Integration and Strict Selection Standards
Bahad 1 has adapted to accommodate a record 16 ultra-Orthodox cadets, who train at a dedicated facility in the Jordan Valley while maintaining their religious lifestyle under the direct oversight of the school's command. Female combat cadets also continue to meet identical physical and professional benchmarks.
Despite the high demand for officers, selection standards remain uncompromising. The attrition rate averages 6% to 8% per cycle, with dismissal decisions finalized in the final weeks of the course. Elbaz explained his decision-making process:
"I look at the cadet and picture my own son as his soldier. I ask myself: would I sleep soundly knowing my son is following him into battle? If the answer is yes, he stays. If I do not trust him completely, he is dismissed. This is the ultimate test."
IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir has reinforced this standard by mandating that only top-tier combat officers with extensive battlefield experience are appointed as instructors and commanders at Bahad 1.
