During one of her regular shifts while serving in an Iron Dome battery in Israel's northern region, Sergeant N. never imagined she would have to intercept an enemy projectile directly threatening her own family's home.
"I live in the north and I am stationed with the 137th Battalion, which protects this very area," she says in a special interview at the Palmachim Airbase. "During that period, Hezbollah was working hard, so to speak, and the northern sector took quite a few hits."
During those nerve-wracking moments, Sergeant N. and her team executed the necessary protocols and later received confirmation that the target had been successfully intercepted. Such operational milestones highlight the intense workload shouldered by air defense troops, with the 137th Battalion and the Arrow missile defense battalion both recording thousands of successful interceptions over the past three years.
Despite severe ammunition economy challenges and relentless barrages from Lebanon, the battalions maintain absolute combat readiness. Troops emphasize that while air defense is not airtight, continuous debriefing and technological adaptation allow them to counter evolving threats effectively.
As the holiday season approaches, soldiers like Sergeant N. and Sergeant First Class E. remain at their bases across the country to secure the home front, ensuring that Israeli citizens can celebrate safely.
