A 21-year-old woman from New York, Dale Alice Martin, tragically died at Waterbury Hospital in Connecticut following a broken ankle sustained while working on a farm. Her family is now suing the hospital, alleging medical malpractice and an overdose of painkillers.

The Incident and Allegations

According to the lawsuit, within just 14 hours of her admission on April 10, 2025, Martin received a massive amount of painkillers that led to respiratory failure. Her family claims the medical staff failed to monitor her condition and did not timely recognize the life-threatening danger. The lawsuit further states that the drugs caused severe sedation, preventing her from calling for help when she experienced breathing difficulties.

"The medical staff failed to monitor her condition, leading to this unimaginable tragedy," stated the family's legal representatives.

An autopsy confirmed that the cause of death was cardiac arrest resulting from multiple types of painkillers.

Hospital Management Under Scrutiny

Beyond the tragic circumstances, the lawsuit raises serious questions regarding the hospital's administration. At the time, the facility was owned by Prospect Medical Holdings, which filed for bankruptcy in January 2025 and faced investigations over operational deficiencies. Reports indicated that nurses were forced to buy food for patients using their own money.

The family's attorney argued that Prospect cut infrastructure, staffing, and training to maximize profits, potentially compromising patient care. Earlier this year, Waterbury Hospital was acquired by Hartford HealthCare.
