Horror in Athens: Afghan migrant killed aid worker and dragged her body in a suitcase
Sharif Ahmadzai, a boxing champion who immigrated to Greece from Afghanistan, is suspected of killing Elizabeth Ross, stuffing her remains into a suitcase, and dumping them in an abandoned house in the Greek capital. The refugee claims he found the Scottish volunteer, who helped refugees, already dead and only disposed of her body to steal her money.
A storm in Greece: Sharif Ahmadzai, a 26-year-old Afghan migrant, is the suspect in the murder of 38-year-old Elizabeth Jane Ross and the disposal of her body in an abandoned house in Athens on July 16. The case made headlines in the country after footage of the man rolling the suitcase through the streets of the Greek capital was released by the police last week.
In the video, Ahmadzai, a boxing champion who has lived in the country for a decade, is seen walking through the city looking like an ordinary tourist, with passersby not noticing him. About 13 minutes later, he is seen leaving the abandoned site without the suitcase and backpack.
Ross's remains, an aid worker who was called the "angel of the refugees," were discovered by a homeless man hiding in an abandoned house, wrapped in a trash bag and stuffed into a suitcase. Forensic reports found that Elizabeth died of suffocation.
During the investigation, Ahmadzai told detectives that Elizabeth was dead when he found her. He claimed he put her in the suitcase only so he could steal her money without raising suspicion. Elizabeth had told her friends she was going to stay with an American couple, but then disappeared.
Ahmadzai arrived on the island of Lesbos in Greece in 2016, and later married US citizen Alina Hall in 2023. The couple worked together to help the homeless with their organization Love Every Nation Athens, through which they reportedly met Elizabeth.
His wife allegedly told the Greek police that her husband had disappeared on the evening of July 15. But when she checked his shared location, it showed him at Elizabeth's apartment. The couple allegedly had a key to the apartment, which they owned, where the Scottish woman was staying.
