Oil Tanker Explodes in Strait of Hormuz Amid Regional Tensions
An oil tanker exploded in the Strait of Hormuz after allegedly striking a naval mine, as regional diplomatic talks aimed at reopening the strategic waterway were abruptly postponed.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reported this evening that the oil tanker EL GAIA exploded after allegedly striking maritime mines. According to the IRGC Navy, the tanker attempted to pass through a restricted navigation area south of the Strait of Hormuz, and subsequent efforts to control the fire failed, leaving the vessel engulfed in flames.
Maritime Tensions in the Gulf
Iran claimed that numerous warnings had previously been issued regarding the dangers of using unauthorized maritime routes. The IRGC Navy declared that the Strait of Hormuz remains closed and under its full control. The Panama-flagged vessel was last tracked on September 5 while anchored at the port of Sohar in Oman, according to tracking data from Vesselfinder.
Canceled Diplomatic Talks
Earlier, representatives from Iran and Gulf states were scheduled to meet in Oman to discuss reopening the Strait of Hormuz to regular tanker traffic. However, Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi announced the postponement of the meeting to ensure proper conditions for constructive dialogue. Regional diplomats continue high-level consultations to address the escalating maritime security crisis.
