President Isaac Herzog warned that the Israel Police is overwhelmed by the country's immense challenges, calling for a significantly stronger and larger force to tackle surging crime, particularly within the Arab sector. In an interview marking the annual conference hosted by Ynet and Yedioth Ahronoth, Herzog addressed pressing national issues just weeks ahead of the upcoming Knesset elections.

Governance Challenges and West Bank Violence

Herzog expressed deep concern over lawlessness across various regions, describing the recent spike in extremist violence in the West Bank as a moral stain on the nation. Commenting on recent clashes involving radical settlers and violent protests, the president stressed that security forces face an intolerable reality that requires comprehensive intervention from the political leadership.

"The violence we are seeing in Judea and Samaria is a huge stain on the face of the country, a moral stain," Herzog stated, emphasizing that these fringe groups do not reflect the values of the broader settlement movement.

Discussing potential measures to restore order, Herzog suggested examining administrative detentions if necessary, arguing that the state cannot continue to tolerate actions that erode the rule of law and harm Israel's international standing amid unprecedented global scrutiny.

Elections and Political Polarization

With elections approaching, Herzog emphasized his commitment to preventing political deadlock and avoiding repeated electoral cycles. He expressed confidence that Israeli citizens will respect the democratic process, reiterating that elections should serve as a mechanism for debate rather than civil strife.

Addressing the ongoing corruption trial of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Herzog reiterated his stance that the legal proceedings should conclude through a plea bargain or negotiated settlement, recalling his previous unfulfilled efforts to mediate a compromise under the auspices of the President's Residence.

Social Cohesion and Ultra-Orthodox Conscription

Turning to demographic shifts and the integration of the ultra-Orthodox community, Herzog acknowledged the complexities surrounding military enlistment and the need to strike a balance with military demands and women's service in the IDF. He stressed that dialogue and mutual respect remain essential to preserving national unity and healing internal divisions.
