President Isaac Herzog announced that he has decided to expunge the criminal record of Elor Azaria, acting against the recommendation of IDF Chief of General Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir. The decision was taken ahead of Yom Kippur, following a request submitted by Azaria.
According to the President's Residence, Herzog weighed the passage of time, the severity of the original offense, and the personal and family circumstances that have changed over the past decade. Azaria served his sentence after being convicted in connection with the 2016 Hebron shooting incident. The president emphasized that the pardon is an act of grace and does not undermine the military legal proceedings or the rulings of the military courts.
Official Reactions and Defense Minister Support
Minister of Defense Israel Katz welcomed the decision, stating that it represents human compassion and the spirit of forgiveness. Katz noted that Azaria served as an outstanding combat soldier in the Kfir Brigade and paid a heavy personal price over the years.
"This is a correct, human, and appropriate decision that reflects the spirit of forgiveness and the opportunity to turn a new page," Katz said.
Background of the Case
The case dates back nearly a decade, during which Azaria completed his prison sentence and sought to clear his record to remove employment barriers. While former and current military leadership, including Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, opposed the move, the president exercised his constitutional authority following formal recommendations and appeals.
