Hebrew University Deems Take-Home Exams Invalid Amid AI Boom
The Hebrew University of Jerusalem has declared take-home exams and unsupervised papers invalid due to AI proliferation, mandating oral defenses and in-class tests.

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem has adopted a comprehensive report declaring that traditional take-home exams and unsupervised assignments are no longer valid assessment methods due to the widespread availability of artificial intelligence tools.
Appointed by Rector Prof. Oron Shagrir and chaired by Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Lilach Sagiv, the special committee concluded that AI-generated coursework is functionally equivalent to plagiarism. The committee emphasized that unsupervised tasks are highly vulnerable to AI manipulation, which undermines the integrity of academic grading and fails to verify genuine student comprehension.
To address this global challenge, the university now requires academic departments to overhaul their evaluation methods. The proposed solutions include mandatory oral presentations for seminar papers, in-class examinations, practical exercises conducted during lectures, and participation-based grading.
Commenting on the institutional shift, Rector Prof. Oron Shagrir noted that the AI revolution compels universities to rethink traditional evaluation frameworks. Academic units must provide faculty members with the necessary training and resources to develop robust, AI-resistant assessment strategies that preserve academic standards.
