Cult HBO Series 'Girls' to Return for a Five-Episode Revival Season
HBO announced that Lena Dunham's cult series Girls will return for a five-episode continuation season, reuniting the original cast to explore their lives at forty.

Almost a decade after leaving the screen, HBO has announced that Girls, the cult series created by Lena Dunham, will return for a five-episode continuation season. Dunham will reprise her role as Hannah, alongside most of the original cast, including Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet, and Andrew Rannells.
The production is expected to begin next year, marking 15 years since the show first premiered and a decade since its sixth season concluded. Dunham, who created, wrote, and directed the original series, will serve as an executive producer on the continuation season alongside Judd Apatow, Ilene S. Landress, and Michael P. Cohen from Good Thing Going. Williams, Kirke, Mamet, and Rannells will serve as co-executive producers.
Behind the Scenes and Missing Faces
Jenni Konner, who was Dunham's close partner in creating and running the show, will not return for the continuation. In her memoir Famesick, Dunham revealed that the two have not spoken since 2018. Adam Driver, who portrayed Hannah's partner, is also currently absent from the returning cast list. In the same book, Dunham claimed that Driver behaved toward her with verbal aggression during the filming of the series.
"We always said we would only return to Girls if we had a specific story we felt we simply had to tell," Dunham said in a statement. "I missed these characters, but for a long time I couldn't quite imagine them in the present. And then, around my 40th birthday, they started talking to me in the shower."
A New Chapter at Forty
Amy Gravitt, Executive Vice President of HBO Programming, added: "We are thrilled to see Lena transition from exploring the storms of the twenties to the challenges of the forties. The world has changed dramatically since we last met Hannah, Marnie, Shoshanna, Jessa, and Elijah, but we are confident fans will be delighted to discover how the characters have matured."
