Severe Benzene Pollution Spikes Recorded in Haifa Bay Monitoring Stations
A severe benzene pollution spike was detected in Haifa Bay near the Bazan petrochemical complex, prompting environmental officials to demand urgent government action and facility closures.
A severe benzene pollution event was recorded in Haifa Bay following a series of alerts regarding sharp increases in pollutant concentrations during the day and night.
Monitoring Data and Suspected Sources
The unusual data were measured at monitoring stations located near the Bazan petrochemical complex fence and at a school courtyard in Kiryat Ata. According to wind directions, the emissions likely originated from the Bazan or Gadiv facilities.
"The continuous alerts and rising benzene concentrations require full responsibility. Haifa Bay residents deserve to know the source of the emissions," stated Avihu Han, Deputy Mayor of Haifa and Chairman of the Haifa Bay Environmental Association.
Official Responses and Demands
Representatives from the industrial complex reported that inspections were conducted but no leaks were detected. However, environmental officials noted that facility shutdown operations were underway and near-zero wind speeds overnight hindered pollutant dispersion.
Dr. Lihi Shahar Berman, CEO of the Haifa Bay Environmental Association, criticized the lack of actionable findings by the factory's emergency teams and demanded immediate accountability and a clear timeline for closing the petrochemical hub.
