Police Seek 8-Day Remand Extension for Driver in Amichai Attia Death
Israeli police will request an eight-day extension of the remand for Mahmoud Samhat, suspected of fatally running over 17-year-old Amichai Attia in Hadera.
Police will ask the court today, Tuesday, to extend the remand of Mahmoud Samhat, a resident of Kafr Manda, by an additional eight days. He is suspected of fatally running over 17-year-old Amichai Attia during a Selichot event at the "Mul HaHof Village" complex in Hadera.
During his interrogation, the suspect claimed he arrived at the location to deliver goods, and that at some point youths attacked his vehicle, causing him to flee the scene. According to his version, while driving away, he did not realize he had struck or run over anyone.
The incident took place last Thursday night, when a confrontation broke out at the shopping complex. During the altercation, Attia was struck by a vehicle, sustained critical injuries, and was later pronounced dead. The driver was injured by gunfire and evacuated for medical treatment. The Shin Bet ruled out a nationalist motive, and police stated that the investigation is proceeding along a criminal track.
