NBA legendary coach Gregg Popovich has married Mary Barth Budenholzer, the ex-wife of his former long-term assistant and championship-winning coach Mike Budenholzer.
Gregg Popovich, one of the greatest coaches in NBA history, has married Mary Barth Budenholzer, the ex-wife of his former longtime assistant Mike Budenholzer. According to a marriage license, the 77-year-old Hall of Fame coach wed Mary in a ceremony held in Texas.
Popovich was previously married to his late wife Erin from 1976 until her passing in April 2018. The connection to Budenholzer adds a fascinating twist to the story, as Mike worked as Popovich's top assistant with the San Antonio Spurs for nearly two decades.
Mike Budenholzer later carved out a successful head coaching career of his own, winning an NBA championship with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2021 and earning Coach of the Year honors twice. Gregg Popovich stepped down from coaching the Spurs in 2025 to transition into his current role as team president.
