The incident occurred during the annual "Athens Flying Week" air show at the Tanagra Air Force Base. No casualties have been reported among the spectators on the ground. The aircraft involved was a two-seat, US-made F-4 Phantom.
Greek Air Force officials stated that it remains unclear whether the two pilots managed to eject before the crash. Firefighting helicopters were dispatched to extinguish the fire that broke out on the ground a few hundred meters from the crowd. A search and rescue operation has been launched, and spectators at the base were instructed to evacuate the area.
