Incident at the Gothenburg Book Fair
The Sweden-Israel Friendship Association established a pavilion focusing on current events related to Israel, much like the previous year. After three relatively calm days, the peace was shattered when a pro-Palestinian demonstrator burst into the Israeli pavilion, poured red paint on the flag, and claimed that Israel was committing genocide.
Security personnel quickly intervened, and the individual was arrested after claiming his actions constituted a "peaceful protest." Organizers swiftly replaced the stained flag with a new one as events continued.
"This is a violation of freedom of speech and goes against the goals of the fair," said David Lega, Secretary General of the European Jewish Association (EJA) and President of the Sweden-Israel Friendship Association, in an interview after witnessing the event.
Freedom of Speech Under Threat
Lega noted that pro-Palestinian groups had also filed a police complaint against the association for alleged war crimes after organizers invited former military figures to speak at the pavilion.
Prominent Swedish-Jewish journalist and publicist Daniel Schatz also criticized the vandalism, emphasizing that the fair’s core theme of free expression must be actively protected from intimidation and attempts to silence dissenting views.
