Goldman Sachs recommends investors add exposure to lagging market sectors following recent volatility in tech stocks, according to MarketWatch. One of the bank's key recommendations is to increase exposure to the consumer discretionary sector, driven by expectations that energy prices and interest rates will fall next year, boosting real consumer income growth.

Consumer Discretionary and Defensive Plays

Ben Snider, senior equity strategist at the bank, noted that exposure to stocks in this sector is at a multi-year low among Wall Street hedge funds, which have recently reduced their holdings in artificial intelligence-related equities. However, if pressures in the technology sector persist, Snider recommends focusing on defensive stocks with high-quality attributes.

The bank compiled a list of 23 stocks within the Russell 1000 index from the healthcare and consumer staples sectors, which are expected to outperform if investors continue trimming growth exposure. These selected equities rank above average in price stability, free cash flow yield, and operating cash conversion efficiency.

Sector Rotation Amid Market Shifts

Since Wednesday, when a new wave of concern swept Wall Street regarding massive debt accumulation by AI companies, capital has rotated toward more defensive market areas. The consumer staples sector advanced by approximately 4%, the healthcare sector rose by 5.8%, and the materials sector gained 2%. Meanwhile, the technology sector weakened by about 4.8% over the same period.
