When Gary Lineker concluded his nearly three-decade career at the BBC last year amid controversy surrounding a shared post containing antisemitic imagery, his professional future appeared uncertain. However, financially speaking, the separation has seemingly worked to his advantage, with his podcasting empire scaling unprecedented heights.
Goalhanger, the podcast production company in which Lineker holds at least a 25% stake, reported revenues of £38 million and a profit of approximately £10 million in 2025. According to financial reports, the company distributed around £5 million to its shareholders—a massive surge compared to just £36,000 the previous year—with Lineker pocketing roughly £1 million from the venture's success.
The Economics of the Podcast Empire
These figures gain significant context when compared to his final salary at the BBC. Lineker, who for years was the corporation's highest-paid on-screen talent, earned about £1.35 million annually. His flagship brand, "The Rest Is Football," which he co-hosts alongside Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, draws over seven million listens monthly. Across its 13 programs, the entire podcast network recorded more than 667 million audio and video plays over the past year.
A major growth catalyst came via Netflix, which signed an agreement with Goalhanger to broadcast "The Rest Is Football" during the World Cup, featuring Lineker, Shearer, Richards, and Joe Cole. The agreement was subsequently extended for an additional two years.
Business Model and Future Outlook
Approximately two thirds of the company's revenues derive from advertising, while it has also accumulated roughly 250,000 paying subscribers. Operating from its London headquarters with approximately 80 employees, Goalhanger's surging valuation and business success have elevated Lineker's estimated personal wealth to roughly £30 million.
Less than a year after his 30-year relationship with the BBC ended prematurely, Lineker sits at the helm of a rapidly expanding media enterprise, transforming a lost television salary into an international multi-platform media powerhouse.
