Senior French Diplomat Assaulted by Revolutionary Guard in Tehran
A senior French diplomat in Tehran was assaulted and detained by Iran's Revolutionary Guard, sparking a diplomatic crisis as Paris weighs potential countermeasures.

A senior French diplomat in Iran was recently assaulted and detained by members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Tehran, according to reports. Rémy Bouallègue, deputy head of mission at the French embassy, was targeted in a violent street confrontation that constitutes a flagrant violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
According to intelligence sources speaking to the French press, Bouallègue was aggressively detained outside the diplomatic compound despite his official immunity, subsequently enduring a harsh interrogation. The incident was immediately reported to the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which opted to handle the matter quietly without public announcements.
Following the breach, the Iranian ambassador was summoned to the Quai d'Orsay to receive a strong formal reprimand. French authorities emphasized that Tehran must guarantee the safety of all diplomatic personnel in accordance with international law. Paris is currently weighing potential countermeasures, ranging from retaliatory steps against Iranian diplomats in France to the complete closure of the embassy.
This marks the second serious incident involving French diplomats in Tehran in less than four months, highlighting a severe deterioration in bilateral ties. A previous event on July 19 involved the brief detention of two cultural attachés visiting local artists, underscoring ongoing tensions despite the earlier release of French hostages in April.
