Mass Looting and Severe Riots Across France Prompt Private Security Measures
Widespread riots and mass looting across France have led luxury brands and local businesses to hire private security and board up storefronts following intense nationwide clashes.

France has been gripped by widespread riots and looting, prompting business owners to take security into their own hands. Following a week of escalating unrest that peaked on Saturday, hundreds of shops across France were looted and severely damaged. Luxury brands like Dior hired private security for their flagship store on Avenue Montaigne in central Paris, while other retailers reinforced metal shutters and boarded up storefronts.
The protests initially began as student demonstrations over deteriorating conditions in high schools, including infrastructure problems and staff shortages. However, the movement rapidly expanded as labor groups and participants from the Yellow Vests movement joined to protest rising living costs and pressure on public services. The crowds swelled to hundreds of thousands, with masked individuals exploiting the chaos to target commercial districts and main streets.
Authorities reported at least 2,400 arrests nationwide as clashes intensified. More than 150 police officers were injured, and approximately 1,500 stores were affected by the violence. The unrest spread beyond Paris to cities such as Marseille, Bordeaux, Lille, and Lyon. Organized groups used gloves and coordinated tactics to disable security cameras and break into storefronts, stealing high-value goods, electronics, and daily necessities.
Prominent luxury boutiques and major chains were targeted, including Louis Vuitton, Rolex, Hermès, Apple, and Galeries Lafayette. In Bordeaux, the Rue Sainte-Catherine suffered extensive damage, while in Marseille, the city hall was breached and vandalized. Business owners expressed deep frustration with the police response, leading many to rely on private protection as the country grapples with the aftermath of the severe violence.
