France and Italy Draw 1:1 in Zinedine Zidane's Home Coaching Debut
Zinedine Zidane's home debut as France coach ended in a 1:1 draw against Italy at the Stade de France, keeping Les Bleus atop their Nations League group.

Zidane's Home Debut Ends in a Draw
Despite violent unrest across the country, the Stade de France in Saint-Denis hosted a festive atmosphere on Friday for Zinedine Zidane's first home match as head coach of the France national team. However, the players failed to rise to the occasion, delivering a disappointing performance in a 1:1 draw against Italy.
Les Bleus lost their perfect record but still lead Group A1 of the UEFA Nations League with seven points—one more than upcoming opponents Belgium and three more than Italy. Dayot Upamecano, sent off near the end with a second yellow card, became the first player in French national team history to receive two red cards in a single calendar year, having also been dismissed in a friendly against Brazil in March.
Post-Match Reactions and Analysis
Zidane summarized the match:
"We deserved more, but that is football. My players were exemplary, and I am proud of them. They gave everything, and I am frustrated for them. In the first half, we retained possession in a sterile manner, which we tried to fix at halftime."
Desire Doue admitted: "We are disappointed with the result; we wanted to win in front of our crowd. Still, we are on the right path, as the coach told us in the dressing room."
Gianluigi Donnarumma, who starred in goal for Italy as captain against former Paris Saint-Germain teammates, stated: "It is always a pleasure to return to Paris, a very special game for me. It is great to see some of my friends again. We played an excellent match."
