Flydubai has suspended its flights to Israel following a security failure involving an Omani pilot, raising critical questions about the carrier's rapid growth and risk management.

Commercial Growth and Rapid Expansion

Flydubai has emerged as one of the fastest-growing airlines in the market. Passenger numbers surged from 9.6 million in 2019 to 15.7 million last year, with revenues growing correspondingly from 1.6 billion dollars to 3.7 billion dollars. The airline also secured the fourth position among low-cost carriers in Airlineratings' safest airlines ranking for 2025.

"Flydubai entered the current crisis from a position of strong commercial strength," says Shahar Golomb, a finance and accounting expert and lecturer at the Afeka Academic College. Between 2022 and 2025, passenger numbers grew by nearly 50%, and the fleet expanded from 74 to 97 aircraft. In Israel specifically, the airline carried approximately 801,000 passengers in 2025, marking a 45% increase compared to 2024.

Risk Management and Screening Concerns

The current incident raises questions regarding recruitment and security screening. Reports that the co-pilot was previously grounded in Oman due to radicalization concerns necessitate an investigation into what information was available to Flydubai and how it was evaluated.

Dr. Uzi Freund-Feinstein, an aviation expert and senior faculty member at Kinneret Academic College, notes that while operating ten daily flights on a single route to Israel is unusual, automated scheduling systems generally manage crew deployment. "Assuming there was no malicious misassignment, I assume it was a scheduling error due to incorrect or missing data entry," he explains.

Economic Outlook and Future Risks

"From an economic perspective, the risk extends beyond the damage to the Israeli route. If the crisis of trust spreads to other markets, the airline could face declining demand and increased expenses," warns Golomb. Passengers' trust will ultimately be rebuilt through transparent findings and the correction of discovered deficiencies.
